UK Unemployment: A Stable but Cooling Labor Market
The UK unemployment rate has held at 4.9% for several months, and the previous release showed it unchanged for the three months to July, better than the 5.0% rise some analysts feared. Beneath the headline, the picture is softer: payrolled employee numbers have been edging down, job vacancies fell to about 702,000, the lowest since early 2021 outside the pandemic, and total pay growth slowed to 3.9%.
The Bank of England watches the labor market closely because tight conditions and firm wage growth can keep inflation elevated, which supports a higher-for-longer rate path. A figure at or below 4.9% would keep that view intact and tends to support the Pound. A rise toward 5.0% or higher would point to cooling demand and could weigh on GBP, particularly with UK CPI due tomorrow.
Germany ZEW: Expecting a Pullback in Sentiment
The ZEW index surveys financial analysts and institutional investors on the economic outlook for the next six months, with readings above zero meaning optimists outnumber pessimists. After turning negative in the spring, sentiment recovered to 34.7 in September, a seven-month high, although slightly below the 37.0 expected because of lingering concerns over energy costs.
For October, analysts expect a step back, with consensus at 32.0 and a forecast of 29.0. Because Germany is the Eurozone's industrial engine, ZEW works as a leading indicator for the region. A reading above consensus would suggest the recovery is holding up despite high energy prices and would support the Euro and the DAX. A larger-than-expected fall would show analysts turning more cautious and could weigh on the Euro.
US Building Permits and Housing Starts: Housing Under Pressure
Building permits are a leading indicator of future construction, while housing starts show projects actually breaking ground. In August, permits fell 2.1% to 1.403 million, with both single-family and multi-family permits lower, and housing starts dropped 2.6% to 1.275 million, the weakest since late 2025. The decline was concentrated in multi-family construction, which plunged 22.5%.
For September, consensus expects permits near 1.40 million and starts to recover modestly to about 1.30 million to 1.31 million. High mortgage rates, which recently reached their highest level since late 2023, and elevated construction costs continue to hold back builders and buyers. A weak report would add to signs that high financing costs are cooling a key part of the economy and could weigh on homebuilders and cyclical stocks. At the same time, with inflation running hot and the Fed due to meet on October 28, soft housing data alone is unlikely to change the rate outlook, so the Dollar reaction may be limited.
Market Takeaway
| Currency | What to Watch For |
|---|---|
| GBP | Unemployment at 4.9% or lower supports the Pound ahead of tomorrow's CPI; a rise toward 5% would add to the cooling story |
| EUR | A ZEW reading above the 32.0 consensus would support the Euro; a drop toward 29 or lower would weigh on it |
| USD | Housing starts below 1.30M would extend the housing slowdown, but the Fed's October 28 decision remains the bigger driver |
